250 YEARS of AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE: The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The first recorded public celebration of Independence Day occurred in 1777 in Philadelphia, one year after the Declaration was adopted.
