250 YEARS of AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE: The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The first recorded public celebration of Independence Day occurred in 1777 in Philadelphia, one year after the Declaration was adopted. Citizens marked the occasion with fireworks, bonfires, music, and public gatherings.
June’s full Strawberry Moon occurs on Monday, June 29, peaking at 7:56 P.M. (EDT). This month marks the height of summer in the northern hemisphere, with longer days and pleasant evenings. Interestingly, June was once the fourth month; it became the sixth month in 46 BC when Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar.
Traditions in May include Maypole dances, May baskets, and flower celebrations. The full moon in May is often referred to as the Flower Moon, symbolizing the blooming of spring flowers. Additionally, various Native American tribes have their own unique names for the full moon in May, such as the Frog Moon.
April is known for its beautiful spring weather and the onset of warmer temperatures, coinciding with the time when the Easter Bunny makes its appearance. The word “April” is derived from the Latin verb “aperire,” which means “to open.” It is commonly believed that this refers to the season when trees and flowers begin to “open” or bloom. April had only 29 days, but a 30th day was added when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar.
March is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. However, many people also associate it with the arrival of spring, as trees begin to bud and flowers start to bloom. March marks the Vernal Equinox, which occurs around March 20th or 21st, and features the Full Worm Moon. Additionally, Daylight Saving Time begins on March 8, 2026.
Groundhog Day is a whimsical tradition that marks the midpoint between winter and spring. The groundhog saw his shadow, which means we can expect six more weeks of winter.
